Looking back, fad dieting has been popular since the 70’s. But, are they really as beneficial to us as they seem? If you’re familiar with these diets, you may have heard of the “grapefruit” or “cabbage diet,”just to name a couple.
I did some research on this topic and found almost everyone who tried fad dieting stopped doing them eventually.
Here’s what I found on the popular fad dieting:
- They are a quick means of losing water weight and some fat, but when you get off the diet the weight comes right back on.
- According to the American Heart Association many of these diets are misleading in weight loss gains.
- People get bored with them very quickly. Gee wizz, I wonder why? Who the heck wants to eat the same thing over and over again for days or even weeks straight?
I found another article by Fran Chance who also reinforces why you should not consider choosing a fad diet. I totally agree with the points Fran makes on this topic.
In conclusion, if you’re considering following one of these fad diets remember you will run the risk of eliminating essential vitamins and minerals, decrease the dietary fiber and essential fatty acids your body needs to function properly. Fad dieting has many risks to consider, and neglecting them is just plain ignorant!
